Francis Thoma “Frank” Cionek was born on October 8, 1919, in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York. He was the son of Antoni Jacob Cionek and Helena Knapik Cionek.

Francis served in the US Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant and passenger on the C-47 #43-48611. On January 18, 1945, he survived the air crash when they took off from A-54 airfield in Le Bourget, France, to be transported to Station 343 in Biggin Hill, England. Due to an unknown reason, the aircraft crashed approximately 7 minutes later after they took off. Eighteen people were killed in this accident, while four were seriously injured.
