Ralph Edgar Hersbergen was born on March 1, 1909, in Iowa. He was the son of Samuel Hersbergen and Lottie Eunice Price Hersbergen.
At the time of his death, he was a passenger on the C-47 #43-48611. On March 2, 1945, he died of wounds sustained in an air crash when they took off from A-54 airfield in Le Bourget, France, to be transported to Station 343 in Biggin Hill, England, on January 18, 1945. Due to an unknown reason, the aircraft crashed approximately 7 minutes later after they took off. Eighteen people were killed in this accident, while four were seriously injured.
