Roy J. Shilling was born on January 28, 1922, in Blairsville, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Frederick J. Shilling and Helen Maize Shilling.

He served in the 321st Squadron, 27th Air Transport Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on the C-47 #43-48611 during World War II. On January 18, 1945, he was killed in an air crash when they took off from A-54 airfield in Le Bourget, France, to transport passengers to Station 343 in Biggin Hill, England. Due to an unknown reason, the aircraft crashed approximately 7 minutes later after they took off. Eighteen people were killed in this accident, while four were seriously injured.
