Carl Lafayette Tripp was born on December 13, 1915, in Jonesboro, Union County, Illinois. He was the son of George Russell Tripp.

Carl served in the 782nd Bomber Squadron, 465th Bomber Group, as a Technical Sergeant and crew member on the B-24 #42-95284 during World War II.

On August 3, 1944, his crew took off from Pantanella, Italy, on a bombing mission over Friedrichshafen, Germany. On their return, they were attacked and shot down by German aircraft. His aircraft crashed at Ehrwald, Tyrol, Austria. He is commemorated on a plaque in Ehrwald, but his place of crash inscribed is at Beim Wasser.

TSgt Tripp is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in the Jonesboro Cemetery, Jonesboro, Union County, Illinois.
