George Hubert Steed, Jr. was born on April 4, 1920, in Campbell County, Virginia. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College, class of 1941. He entered the service in June 1942, commissioned at Columbus, and went overseas in November 1944.

George served in the 670th Bomber Squadron, 416th Bomb Group, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot during World War II. On February 8, 1945, at 09h47, 1Lt Steed, with Sgt Tranchina, took off from A-55 Melun/Villaroche, France, on a bombing mission to Nutterden, Germany. On the return, 1Lt Steed's aircraft ran out of gas and crashed in a forest in Montgeron, France. 1Lt Steed was killed in the crash and was buried near the crash site. In 1946, his body was exhumed and reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
