Alford R. Munro was born on May 17, 1923, in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. He was the son of John Wesley Munro and Marie Benson Munro.
Alford served in the 316th Fighter Squadron, 324th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and P-47 Pilot during World War II. On January 7, 1945, 1Lt Munro took off from Luneville Y-2 airfield to ferry aircraft from A-47 Orly to Y-7 Dole/Tavaux. At 13h30, he collided with a hill and crashed at Rochignard woods. He was killed in this incident.
Extract from the investigation report (Source: Accident Report - AFHRA):
Lt Alford Monro's aircraft crashed at a point 2,25 kilometers southwest of Montillot, map référence WN-0881. From my investigation, it appeared as though the aircraft went nearly straight down. The accident occurred on a heavily wooded hill which was about 550 feet high. French civilians stated that the aircraft exploded when it crashed, and from the wreckage and burned parts these facts are correct.
Note that the investigation report indicates the crash site is 2.25 km SW of Montillot (wN0881). Rochignard is on the northeast side of Montillot.
