James William Gilbert, Jr. was born on February 1, 1916, in New Oxford, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of James W. Gilbert and Nora Gertrude Baker Gilbert.

James served in the 44th Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, as a Technician 5th Grade during World War II. He was one of the 75 soldiers killed during the liberation of Plabennec and Plouvien, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
