Paul Joseph Katonik was born on was born on January 22, 1918, in Munhall, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Michael Katonik.
Before entering the service on December 27, 1943, Paul was employed at the Edgar Thomas Steel Works in Homestead, PA. He was graduated from St. Micahel's School.
Paul served in HQ/3, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in action on September 20, 1944, during Operation Market Garden while participating in the Waal River crossing, the heroic crossing that liberated Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He was one of the 49 paratroopers killed during the assault on German positions on the opposite bank. Pvt Katonik is now buried in the All Saints Braddock Catholic Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA.
