Warren Roy Johnston was born on January 24, 1926, in Escanaba, Delta County, Michigan. He was the son of Harold Harrison Johnston and Caroline Ladouceur Johnston.

Warren enlisted in the Army on March 10, 1943, while he was attending Escanaba high school. After training at Fort Benning, GA, he went overseas on July 20, 1943. Before his death, Pvt Johnston participated in the North African, Sicilian, and Anzio beachhead campaigns. At the time of his death, he was serving in HQ/3, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Private.

Pvt Warren died during Operation Market Garden. He participated in the Waal River crossing on September 20, 1944, the heroic crossing that liberated Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He was Killed in Action a day after the crossing, in a canvas boat about 2 km west of the Waal Bridge, at the bridgehead near the village of Lent on the northern banks of the Waal River. He is now buried in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery, Wells, Delta County, Michigan, USA.
