James Albert Jacobs was born on September 8, 1923, in Cheraw, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He was the son of William Andrew Jacobs and Emily Jane Eddings Jacobs.
James served in Company C, 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion, as a Corporal, during World War II. He was Killed in action on September 20, 1944, during Operation Market Garden while participating in the Waal River crossing, the heroic crossing that liberated Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He was one of the 49 paratroopers killed during the assault on German positions on the opposite bank. Cpl Jacobs was initially buried in the Temporary American War Cemetery at Molenhock, Holland (The Netherlands), on September 22, 1944. He is now buried in the Old Saint Davids's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Cheraw, Chesterfield County, South Carolina, USA.
