John William Hall, Jr. was born on October 26, 1923, in Flagstaff, Coconino County, Arizona, and had one year of college. His legal residence was Fresno County, California.

John was a member of the U. S. Army Enlisted Reserves and was brought on active duty on 22 November 1943 at Fort McArthur, San Pedro, California. At the time of his death, he was serving in Company I, 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. He died of wounds after being severely wounded in action on September 20, 1944, during Operation Market Garden while participating in the Waal River crossing, the heroic crossing that liberated Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He was one of the 49 paratroopers killed during the assault on German positions on the opposite bank.

Pvt Hall was initially buried in the Temporary American War Cemetery at Molenhoek, Holland (The Netherlands), on September 22, 1944. He is now buried in the Liberty Veterans Cemetery, Fresno, Fresno County, California, USA.
