Robert Deerwood Mateer was born on August 3, 1925, in Allegheny Furnace, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Arthur Raymond Mateer and Hattie C Stover Mateer.

Robert served in Company G, 397th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 12, 1945, and is now buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France.
