Orvin Burkholder of York, Pennsylvania, served in the 2nd Battalion, 397th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, during World War II. The memorial lists that he died between October 20, 1944, and March 22, 1945. However, we believe this is an inadvertent listing and that he became a POW on January 9, 1945.

Orvin H. Burkholder, 89, died at 9:45 p.m., Monday, November 24, 2003, at Country Meadows of York. He was the husband of Pauline A. (Hoover) Burkholder with whom he observed a 70th wedding anniversary on June 24th.
Mr. Burkholder was born December 4, 1913, in Harrisonburg, Va. He was the son of the late Oscar H. and Elizabeth (Wenger) Burkholder. He owned and operated the former Burkey's Supermarket on E. Princess St. in York for many years and retired in 1979 as the Store manager of the former Colonial Super Thrift. He later retired from the Administrative Department of the former P.A. & S. Small and was a member of Scrivener's 25 year Club. He was a member of A.A.R.P. and the White Rose Chapter #28 of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II having served with the 40th Combat Engineers in Southern France until becoming wounded and was later transferred to Head Quarters Co. - 397th Infantry, 100th Division. He was taken prisoner of war on January 9, 1945, then liberated by the 3rd Armored Division on Friday, April 13, 1945. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, E.T.O. Ribbon with 3 battle stars and the P.O.W. Medal.
