Comments:
On the morning of Tuesday, June 25, 1963, two North American F-100 'Super Sabre' supersonic fighters (one belonging to 1Lt Evans) took off from Hahn Air Base, Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). Taking the direction of Mâcon (71/Saône-et-Loire), they must signal their vertical passage from Montbéliard (25/Doubs) at 10 o'clock in the morning. Unfortunately, due to thick fog, the two aircraft took a route well to the north of the town and crashed simultaneously, at 800 km/h, into the Luthier rocks (north of the Col du Luthier and east of the Ballon de Servance), in the southern Vosges mountains. The two pilots were killed in the crash.
