William Richard Whittington was born on November 11, 1937. He was the son of Chauncey Gordon Whittington and Lena Park Whittington.
On the morning of Tuesday, June 25, 1963, two North American F-100 'Super Sabre' supersonic fighters (one belonging to 1Lt Whittington) took off from Hahn Air Base, Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). Taking the direction of Mâcon (71/Saône-et-Loire), they must signal their vertical passage from Montbéliard (25/Doubs) at 10 o'clock in the morning. Unfortunately, due to thick fog, the two aircraft took a route well to the north of the town and crashed simultaneously, at 800 km/h, into the Luthier rocks (north of the Col du Luthier and east of the Ballon de Servance), in the southern Vosges mountains. The two pilots were killed in the crash.
