Lupe served in the 783rd Bomber Squadron, 465th Bomb Group, as a Staff Sergeant and Gunner on the B-24 Liberator "TS" #42-52478 during World War II. On July 12, 1944, his crew took off from Pantanella airbase in Italy on a mission to attack the marshaling yard of Nīmes, France. Shot down by an enemy Me109 fighter, the crew evacuated their plane at 11h:30 (except for Sgt Montana). Their airplane crashed at Les Mays in the commune of La Tour-d'Aigues. Originally buried at the town cemetery of La Tour-d'Aigues, he is now buried in the Calvary Cemetery, Madera, Madera County, California, USA.
