James served in the 597th Bomber Squadron, 397th Bomb Group, as a Staff Sergeant and Radio Operator on the B-55-MA "Post War Plans" #42-96127 during World War II.
On June 24, 1944, his crew took off from Station 168 airfield in Rivenhall, England, with an assigned target of Maisons-La-Fitte Bridge, France. Hit by flak at about 1930hrs, their airplane went straight down the Avenue La Fountaine in Maisons-Lafitte. All members were killed in this incident.
