Michael Francis Campbell was born on April 8, 1942, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of Ronald and Josephine Campbell, who predeceased her son.
He attended Sacred Heart and Park Junior High Schools and was a member of No. 6 Medical Company in Sydney, and at the age of seventeen, he left Cape Breton Island for a forestry job in Port Alberni, British Columbia. While working in Port Alberni, he met his wife, Vicky, and eventually enlisted in the US Army.
With orders for Vietnam, he arrived for duty on January 21, 1968, where he was assigned to and served with B Company, 2d Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division.
On April 26, during a search and destroy operation in Northern Quang Tri Province, PFC Campbell was hit and killed by enemy rifle fire.
