Daniel Louis Paul Sauve was born on October 15, 1947, in Quebec, Canada. He joined the US Marine Corps on November 19, 1964, and after training, was assigned to Hotel Co 2d Battalion, 4th Marines 3d MAR DIV.

His unit was deployed to Vietnam where he participated in several large operations, the first being Operation Starlite.

In January 1966, he was transferred to H&S Co, where a tragic event occurred that would end his life. While in their living quarters in the vicinity of Da Nang, the Marines were singing when one of them began to strum an M-14 rifle as if he was playing guitar. Unknown to the man, the rifle was loaded, there was an accidental discharge and a shot rang out striking and causing the death of PFC Sauve.
