Born on June 26, 1946, in Ohsweken, Ontario, Canada, Leslie was the son of Harvey A. General and Virginia General of Niagara, Falls, NY. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 22, 1966, in Buffalo, NY. He began recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina, on June 24 and graduated from "Boot Camp" on August 17 with Platoon 2020. He arrived in Vietnam on September 23, 1967, and was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

Beginning on May 1, the Battalion participated in Operation NAPOLEON/SALINE within the Cua Viet River area complex in northern Quang Tri Province. Company B had been placed under the OPCON (Operational Control) of BLT (Battalion Landing Team) 2/4 on April 30 and was positioned on the northern bank of the Song (River) Bo Dieu north of Thon Lap Thach (2) village.

At 0600 Hours on the morning of May 1, Company B began crossing the river under enemy fire and assaulted a hamlet just south of Dai Do running into heavy enemy 57mm recoilless rifle and mortar fire. The Marines immediately requested supporting arms against the NVA, who were in fortified positions and watched as artillery pounded the enemy. By late afternoon they had cleared most of the NVA soldiers from their objective, searched their objective for enemy materiel, and consolidated their position. The short victory had been costly for the Marines, who had nine men killed in the day's action, including Corporal General, who had been killed as a result of an enemy gunshot wound.
