Born on February 19, 1943, in Little Current, Ontario, Canada, Austin Morris Corbiere of Ojibwa heritage was the son of Steven Corbiere and Josephine Kewakundo. He was raised by his older sister Dorothy Corbiere in a two-bedroom shack along with nine other children on the Sucker Creek Reserve. While living with his uncle on the Six Nations Reserve in Hagersville, Ontario, he decided to enlist in the US Marines on October 3, 1965, in Buffalo, NY. In Vietnam, he served with H&S Company, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MAR DIV (Rein) FMF.

On May 9, 1966, a tragic event occurred which caused the death of LCpl Corbiere and PFC Romack. On the outskirts of the An Hoa Combat Base in Quang Nam Province, several Marines were in Vietnamese hooch enjoying some beverages, PFC Romack and LCpl Corbiere exited the small bar, and for an unknown reason, some harsh words were exchanged, a scuffle then broke out between the two men in front of the establishment. An M26A1 Grenade that Austin had attached to his web belt detached and accidentally exploded causing the accidental death of both Marines.

Austin's' body was shipped back to Little Current on Manitoulin Island and buried in an unmarked grave except for a simple wooden cross in the Little Current Anglican cemetery. He lay there unrecognized for twenty-five years until June 1991, when veterans from across Canada and the United States came to pay their respects, and a Military Marker was placed on his grave.
