Billy Murphy was a prominent coffee businessman in El Salvador who also owned tobacco ranches in Texas. On August 7, 1989, he was gunned down at his home by unidentified assailants during a kidnapping attempt. The gunmen shot Billy, who tried to resist abduction at his home in northeastern San Salvador.

According to police reports, Murphy's wife, Marta, tried to prevent an unidentified man from breaking into their house but ran to a nearby store after she was fired at by men waiting outside. One of the gunmen then entered the house and shot Billy, who tried to resist. After the bungled attempt, the gunmen fled to a waiting van and sped off. Billy was still alive when his wife drove him to the hospital, but died two hours later.
