John J. Sullivan Jr., 26, was a freelance journalist from Bogota, N.J. He was one of the American victims of the Salvadoran civil war and was on an assignment for Hustler magazine when he went missing. Sullivan, who had spent a year in Rio de Janeiro, checked into the Sheraton six days before the slayings in the dining room. He left his room the next day (December 8, 1980), leaving behind his camera, tape recorder, typewriter, a Spanish dictionary, and a well-worn handbook on South America. Unfortunately, Sullivan never returned to his room. His death became known after more than two years when his remains were sent to the United States and identified by the Rockland County, N.Y., Chief Medical Examiner. The medical examiner said Mr. Sullivan appeared to have been murdered.
