John Leavitt Carter was born on May 1, 1920, in Ohio. He was the son of George Miller Carter and Barbara Leavitt Carter.

John served in the 396th Fighter Squadron, 368th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of the P-47 #42-76325 during World War II.

On July 2, 1944, 1Lt Carter took off from A-3 airfield in Cardonville, France, on a mission to destroy the railway installations in Nantes, France. His aircraft experienced a mechanical failure that led him to crash into a house near the church of Montbray. Seven occupants were killed in the incident while 1Lt Carter was too late to eject, causing his death.

1Lt Carter was buried in the Montbray Cemetery before being transferred to a temporary US military cemetery but was repatriated at the request of the family in 1948 – 1949. He was finally buried in Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Michigan.
