Joseph T. Cagney was born on January 19, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of James E. and Florence B. Cagney.

Joseph served in the 10th Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on the P-47 Thunderbolt #42-75427 during World War II.

On July 29, 1944, he took off from A-10 airfield in Carentan, France, on an armed reconnaissance mission to St-Lô/St-Denis-le-Gast. Hit by flak at 12:10 PM, he crashed into Cerisy-la-Salle. 2Lt Cagney did not survive. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
