Warren Maynard Smith was born on February 19, 1923, in Ashland, Virginia. He was the son of Archer Preston Smith and Mary Ella Bowles Smith.

Prior to his entry into the service, Warren was an employee of the Virginia Dairy Company of Richmond. He served as a Technician 4th Grade in the Headquarters & Service Company, 147th Engineer Combat Battalion, during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, on the Normandy beachhead and is now buried in the Berea Baptist Church Cemetery, Rockville, Hanover County, Virginia, USA.
