Teddy Hollis Sanford was born on December 31, 1907, in Skedee, Pawnee County, Oklahoma. He was the son of John Thomas Sanford and Cora Francis Endicott Sanford. He was married to Cora Juanita Kelley Sanford.

Major General Teddy Sanford was one of the original members of the 82nd Airborne Division and served with the unit throughout World War II. He fought in Sicily, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. He was commander of the division rear guard during the Battle of the Bulge. He made glider landings in Normandy and Holland. He served a total of 44 years and commanded the 504th Airborne Infantry Regiment; the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team; the 7th Infantry Division and the XIX Army Corps.

After retiring from the Army in 1967, Sanford became a rancher on land owned by the family in Pawnee County, Oklahoma since the Land Rush of 1893. He lived there until the failing health of his wife (Cora) forced a move into Pawnee in 1990. He lived there until his death of heart failure in 1992. Sanford is now buried in the Highland Cemetery, Pawnee, Pawnee County, Oklahoma. He attained his highest rank in the military as a Major General.
