Roland enlisted in the Army on October 8, 1942, and at the time of his death, was serving in the 51st Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division, as a Private First Class. He was killed in Pont-Scorff, France, on August 7, 1944, and is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
