When Charles H. Bates was born on July 1, 1926, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, his father, Joseph, was 27 and his mother, Gertrude, was 22. He had three brothers and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on February 26, 1945 and is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium.
