Carson Max Roberts was born on June 27, 1918, in Hamilton County, Tennessee. A former US Navy sailor, he served first in the American Volunteer Group (A. V. G.), nicknamed the "Flying Tigers," in Burma. He was part of the ground teams at the time. He later learned how to fly and was a distinguished C-47 transport pilot on the African and European fronts.

At the time of his death, Carson was serving in the 17th Troop Carrier Squadron, 64th Troop Carrier Group, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on the C-47 #42-92700. On November 1, 1944, on a medical evacuation mission, they were trying to reach Montélimar from Luxeuil and then to a hospital in Naples, Italy. On board are five crew members, nine American wounded soldiers, and six German wounded prisoners. At around 2:30 PM, the airplane hit the Pilat mountain range and crashed due to poor weather conditions. Unfortunately, there were no survivors.

1Lt Roberts is now buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA.
