James Richard “Pat” Crowe was born on March 4, 1889, in Sheffield, Alabama. He was the son of James Richard Crowe.

Pat graduated from the University of Tennessee, where he specialized in entomology, but was compelled to give up that profession. He went to Memphis, where he engaged in newspaper work. He came to New York about 1915 and became a reporter for "The Sun." A few months before entering the military service, Pat was connected with the National Bank of Commerce.

2Lt Crowe was killed in an airplane accident in France. He was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919. 2Lt Crowe is now buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France.
