Joseph Albert Bettenhausen was born on January 15, 1894, in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. He was the son of George Henry Bettenhausen and Rose Bettenhausen Arnold Mans.
Joseph was a Cadet in the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps Reserve. He was killed in an airplane accident in Issoudin, France, on May 14, 1918. He is now buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France.
