Rufus Lemuel Roberts was born on April 13, 1915, in Hillsdale, Hillsdale County, Michigan. At the time of his death, Rufus was serving in the 56th Field Artillery Battalion, 8th Infantry Division, as a First Lieutenant and Observer on the Piper L-4 #43-30014.

On August 9, 1944, during a mission to drop plasma pouches to ground troops, his plane crashed near Pleurtuit, France. The airplane was shot down by flak and possibly collided with Piper L-4 #43-29658. 1Lt Roberts is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
