William Albert Kirk was born on July 4, 1915. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Kirk.

William enlisted in the Navy in October 1943 and served aboard the USS Pope as a Water Tender 2nd Class. He was one of the two survivors when his ship sank during the Battle of the Java Sea. William was captured by the Japanese and was taken to the Fukuoka camp in Nagasaki - Koyagimachi, Japan. He died of acute pneumonia in the prison camp. William is now buried in the Ashland Cemetery, Saint Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, USA.
