Ellis T. Lyons was born on May 4, 1922, in Louisiana. He was the son of Minor Moreland Lyons and Gertrude Thompson Lyons. He was married to Velna Hazel Lyons Flynn.
Ellis served in the 511th Fighter Squadron, 405th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on the P-47 #42-28380 during World War II. On September 9, 1944, he took off from Advanced Landing Ground A-8 in Picauville, France, for an armed reconnaissance mission to Germany. At 3:30 PM, his plane was shot down by flak, but he was able to bail out. He was captured by the Germans, hospitalized, and died on September 20, probably due to his injuries.
1Lt Lyons is now buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
