Doyal C. Woody was born on March 15, 1917, in Wilder, Tennessee. He was the son of James Martin Woody and Mary S Woody.

Doyal served in the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 27, 1944, during the liberation of Vexin, France, and is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
