John served in the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 27, 1944, at the age of 19, during the liberation of Vexin, France. PFC Thomas is now buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery, Crystal, Obion County, Tennessee, USA.
