Gilbert Carlson was born on June 19, 1908, in Washington County, Kansas. He was the son of August Ludwig Carlson and Belle Hyland Carlson.

Gilbert enlisted on June 19, 1942, and served in the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 26, 1944, at the age of 36, during the liberation of Vexin, France. PFC Carlson is now buried in the Washington Cemetery, Washington, Washington County, Kansas, USA.
