Earl Mason Guessford Sr. was born on August 19, 1909, in Washington County, Maryland. He was the son of Edward Guessford and Lillie Jane Higgins Guessford.

Earl entered the Army in September of 1943, having been formerly employed at the Byron Tannery in Williamsport. He served in the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 27, 1944, at the age of 35, during the liberation of Vexin, France. Pvt Guessford is now buried in the Antietam National Cemetery, Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland, USA.
