Joseph served in the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 29, 1944, during the liberation of Vexin, France. Pvt Mattie is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Fremont, Steuben County, New York, and Saint Ann Cemetery, Hornell, Steuben County, New York.
