Roger Lee Wood was born on May 25, 1922, in Milford, Massachusetts. He was the son of Ernest Perry Wood and Millicent Hudson Wood.

Roger served in the 514th Fighter Squadron, 406th Fighter Group, as a Pilot and First Lieutenant during World War II. On August 23, 1944, he was killed while flying the P-47D #42-28300 which took off from Creteville, France to attack an armored column near Nantes, France. He strafed tanks and motor transports but he was shot down by flak at 01:20 PM and crashed at Breuil-en-Vexin, five miles northeast of Mantes-la-Jolie. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
