Bernard G. Ward was born on June 22, 1921, in Jefferson County, Illinois. He was the son of James Arthur Ward and Amelia Florence Hawkins Ward.

Bernard served in the Company L, 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 20, 1944, during the liberation of Vexin in France, and he is now buried in the Zion Grove Cemetery, Kell, Marion County, Illinois, USA.
