Harold Melville Clark was born on October 4, 1890, in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. He was the son of Charles Asa Clark and Amanda Dexter "Minnie" Palmer Clark. He spent part of his youth in Manila, Philippines, before joining the military in 1913.
Harold began his military career in 1913 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Cavalry Division. He transferred to the Army Signal Corps' aviation section in 1916, earning his wings in 1917. While assigned to the 6th Aero Squadron in Hawaii, he completed the first round-trip inter-island flight on March 15, 1918, and later became the first airman to deliver mail in the Hawaiian Islands. After surviving a crash during a three-island flight, Clark returned to the U.S. and served in various aviation roles. Promoted to Major, he became an executive officer in Panama, where he died in a seaplane crash at the Miraflores Locks on May 2, 1919. Major Clark is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. Clark Air Base, Clark International Airport, and New Clark City in the Philippines are named in his honor.
