Benjamin Winget Lowell was born on May 28, 1922, in Syracuse, New York. He was the son of Charles A. Lowell and Maude M. Spencer Lowell.
Benjamin enlisted in the Army Air Corps on July 3, 1942. Prior to entering the service he, with his brother Lieut. Spencer Lowell, a supply officer of the Signal Corps stationed in England, operated a photo service.
Benjamin served in the 585th Bomber Squadron, 394th Bomber Group, Medium, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on the B-26 #42-96224. On August 7, 1944, his crew took off from airfield Station 455 in Holmsley South, England, on a mission to bomb the bridge at Nogent-sur-Seine, France. At 1:35 PM, their plane was shot down by flak and crashed 700m northeast of La Goulafrière - Cne de St-Pierre-des-Ifs, southwest of Lisieux. The only survivor in this crash was SSgt Bishop, who evacuated the plane by parachute but was taken as a prisoner.
2Lt Lowell is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France. He also has a cenotaph located in the Cortland Rural Cemetery, New York.
