John Joseph Cavallaro was born on November 2, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Giacomo Cavallaro and Theresa Cavallaro.

John served in the 585th Bomber Squadron, 394th Bomber Group, Medium, as a Staff Sergeant and Mechanic on the B-26 #42-96224 during World War II. On August 7, 1944, his crew took off from airfield Station 455 in Holmsley South, England, on a mission to bomb the bridge at Nogent-sur-Seine, France. At 1:35 PM, their plane was shot down by flak and crashed 700m northeast of La Goulafrière - Cne de St-Pierre-des-Ifs, southwest of Lisieux. The only survivor in this crash was SSgt Bishop, who evacuated the plane by parachute but was taken as a prisoner.

SSgt Cavallaro is now buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, USA.
