Biography: Paul William Baade Major General, U.S. Army
Paul William Baade was born on 16 April 1889 in Fort Wayne, IN.
Baade attended the U.S. Military Academy, graduated with the Class of 1911, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry. He served with the 322nd Infantry in France during World War I.
He graduated from the Command and General Staff School in 1924 and from the Army War College in 1929. He was a Staff Officer, then Commanding Officer, of the 16th Infantry from 1939-41. He was promoted to Brigadier General in July 1941.
From July 1942-December 1945, Baade first served as Assistant Division Commander, then as Commanding General, of the 35th Infantry Division. He was promoted to Major General in February 1943.
Baade served two terms on the Army's General Staff and retired in September 1946.

In Retirement: After his retirement, he lived in Santa Barbara, CA, with his wife, Margaret Craig Baade. On 7 December 1946, Baade and his wife survived the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta, GA, by crawling across a plank to a neighboring building.
Death and Burial: Major General Paul William Baade died on 9 October 1959 at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, CA. He was 70 years old. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
