Statement of 2Lt Wayne E. Leathers:
"I was flying vortex blue four on Lt. Maxwell's wing, on a Chattanooga [bombing and strafing trains] mission to the Wilhelmshaven area. Due to weather we could not definitely pin point our position and when leaving the area, we accidentally crossed over a very heavily defended area at about 6,ooo feet. We began taking individual evasive action and about one minute later I heard Lt. Maxwell call in that he was hit and was going to bail out. That was the last I heard or saw of Lt. Maxwell."
