Johnnie F. Martin entered military service in Texas. He served in the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of the P-47 #42-8692 during World War II.
He was Killed in Action on November 29, 1943, in the Netherlands. That day, he was on a mission to provide escort to bombers attacking at Bremen, Germany. He was last seen in the area east of the Zuider Zee, Holland, returning to base on top of a cloud layer at 27,000 ft. His aircraft had sustained battle damage from German fighters. He indicated he was getting down through the clouds. At 22,000 ft. he made a turn to the right and then down. His airplane crashed at Hellendoorn.
2Lt Martin is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
