Edward Powell Lee, Jr. was born on January 27, 1923, in Anderson, South Carolina. He was the son of Rev. and Mrs. E. Powell Lee.

Edward served in the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Fighter Pilot of the P-47 #42-76422 during World War II. On an armed reconnaissance mission on June 8, 1944, 1Lt Lee took off from airfield Station 369 in Martlesham Heath, England, flying in no. 3 of the White section. His airplane was shot down by Me109 (Theodore Weissenburger) around 7:00 PM. His plane was seen to pull up and climb on fire with a lot of flames coming out, then falling off in a stall and did a full spin hitting the ground approximately 1/4 mile from where he was strafing, exploding upon impact. The plane crashed at Omiecourt 12 km northeast of Roye, France.
