Robert A. Coughenour, Jr. was born on May 7, 1924, in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Robert Andrew Coughenour and Gladys Coughenour.
Robert, Jr. served in the 359th Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Fighter Pilot during World War II. He failed to return from an operational sortie when his engine encountered problems over the North Sea near Orford Ness, Norfolk. 2Lt Coughenour was declared Missing in Action. His body was never found, but his name is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
